Bill Nye-The Joy of Discovery

Bill Nye recently was involved in a debate on the topic of creation.  MelodySheep, a Youtuber, created a "mashup" of some of what Bill Nye said at the debate.  Whether you believe in a Higher Power or not, what he said about the Joy of Discovery is awesome.  It is the joy of discovery that makes every human being a scientist.  We explore, test, hypothesize and form conclusions.  Watch this video with your students to see if they agree with what was said.  The images and videos attached to this video are beautiful.

Math (Long Division): Learn your long division in the style of Gangnam.

Levin Intermediate School in New York had a couple of math classes create a math video as a parody to the Gangnam Style song.  The topic was long division.  The toon is pretty catchy.  Way to go Levin teachers for getting your students engaged in their own learning.  When a teachers wants to discuss more on long division and demonstrate the process differently this video is going to be great.

Science (Physics): How small is an atom?

Here is another TedEd video entitled "Just how small is an atom?"  It does an excellent job explaining the answer to that question.  The science video compares an atom to the size of a grapefruit and a blueberry.  It is amazing to visualize just how small atoms really are.  If you happen to be teaching about atomic structure, this might help your students understand this particular scientific concept.

Amazing Kids: 14 year old computer programmer

This amazing kids video is one that I show to my Math for Life class.  I am trying to get my students to realize that they can be whatever they would like if they are willing to plan, prepare, and execute smart decisions.  This goes with the part of my curriculum about investing in oneself.  This video would be great for all teachers to show to High School students about how setting up your priorities now can benefit the outcome later. In the video we find a 14 year, who is now probably 16, who reads and writes computer code.  He has developed multiple apps and sells them in app stores.  His thoughts on how traditional school are kind of interesting as well.

Science (Biology): How does our nose smell?

Here is another TEDed lesson on how our noses smell and detect odor.  This is a cartoonized video with a great story track.  This science video goes through the different parts of the nose and some parts of the tongue as taste and smell go hand in hand.  The video also discusses the difference between certain animals and our human noses.  One of the interesting science concepts that is discuss is why some people lack a sense of smell.  Some of those scientific concepts I hadn't ever been taught in school.

Awesome Kids: 15 year old from Sierra Leone changes his community.

This video is about really cool kid from Sierra Leone.  He is 15 years old and taking garbage and junk out of dumpsters he has created his own generator, FM radio station, and batteries so that he could send out information to his community.  It is amazing to see somebody with little means create a future for himself and others.  Use this to demonstrate to your students that with work and desire, anything is possible.

Awesome Kids: 3rd Grader's experiment showed interesting results.

This awesome kid bought some potatoes in order to do an experiment for science.  She wanted to soak them in water and watch sprouts come out and grow a potato plant.  The interesting thing was that her first two potatoes didn't grow anything.  This made her curious so she asked questions.  To her surprise she found out that some potato companies spray the potato with chemicals to keep them from sprouting.  She shows the results of her experiment and the experimental process in detail.  I was quite impressed with the questions and answers she came up with.  We need to get all of our students to start asking and answering questions.  Check her video out, shes fun to listen to as she explains the process.

Awesome Kids: 16 year old invents a non-decaying bioplastic.

This young lady loved science and created a non-decaying bioplastic from banana peels.  If you want to inspire your science students with a great example then show them this video.

Science and History: The History and Future of Everything is all about Time.

This video does an excellent job discussing the our recent history and the technological age.  It then goes on to demonstrate ancient history and does a really great job at helping us comprehend how long that was.  In the video we then move on to Prehistoric history and the current theories about how old the Earth actually is.  The video doesn't stop there though, it keeps going into the history of the Solar System, Galaxy and Universe.  After think this video is almost over, we get into the future history of the Earth, Solar System, Galaxy and Universe.

In order to enjoy watching this video though you might have to suspend your belief system about creation and let your students know that these are all the theories, hypothesis and ideas that have been generated with our human understanding.  The video itself is really good.

Science: Why do some objects feel colder when in reality they are the same temperature?

I really am liking Veritasiums scientific Youtube videos.  You all ought to check out his educational Youtube page.  In this video he goes to a park and asks pedestrians why a hard drive and a book sitting at the same temperature have a different temperature feel to it.  The hard drive feels colder than the book.  He then takes an aluminum plate and a plastic plate to see which plate melts ice quicker.  Even though the aluminum plate feels colder, it melts the ice quicker.  This science experiment is very similar to ones that I do with my 7th grade science classes.

If you are looking for a video that will bring your students to a better understanding as to what life was like during the Great Depression, then search no longer.  This video comes from the National Archives in which they have different survivors of the depression tell their stories.

This guy does an excellent job using actual rock specimens to give you a simple way to identify the three types of rock. Metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous. Even though there are always exceptions to rules in science, you will find out some characteristics of each rock type that will give you an idea of what type of rock you are looking at.

Science: What are the types of lava flows?

This educational science video shows some of the different types of lava flows. There really aren't any word in the video, but it has some excellent quality photography. If you are discussing lava in the classroom, then this video would be an excellent introduction.
